In small, rural-area schools, a traditional approach to teaching—centered on memorization, with limited didactic resources and few opportunities for laboratory work—remains common. In this context, university outreach initiatives become essential; they foster integration between the university and the school, introducing new methodologies, resources, and experiences that broaden learning possibilities. This paper discusses an outreach initiative carried out in small towns in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The activities took place in the municipalities of Vera Cruz, Pedro Velho, and Baia Formosa, involving 120 public school students. The program began with an interactive presentation on microscopy and cellular structure, followed by a hands-on microscopy session that allowed students to observe cells. The experience demonstrated how interactive, practical teaching methods enhance learning, making it more dynamic and meaningful. Ultimately, this initiative reaffirms the vital role of university outreach as a bridge between the university and the community, contributing to the scientific education of K-12 students while strengthening the social mission of higher education institutions.
