Abstract

The knee is one of the most important joints in the human body. Certain sports activities can subject it to high levels of stress and joint or muscular tension, potentially leading to injuries or dysfunctions that—if left unaddressed—could develop into more serious conditions. Dynamic squatting—a common exercise in disciplines such as weight training, cross-training, and functional training—can place significant stress on the knee joints, particularly during high-intensity workouts. It is therefore essential to understand the impacts involved and the best ways to mitigate them. This study examines the primary impacts of dynamic squatting on the knees, as well as methods for their prevention. It is a systematic review based on seven articles published between 2003 and 2023, sourced from the SciELO database and Google Scholar, in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. The selected articles and studies indicate that squatting can promote strengthening, muscle mass gain, improved range of motion, and physical readiness for various activities—provided it is performed correctly and safely, with proper mastery of technique and adequate musculoskeletal preparation. Conversely, the findings demonstrate that if squatting is not performed correctly or without the necessary preparation, it can have negative consequences, potentially resulting in injuries and various pathologies.
