Autonomous Medication Management (GAM) is a participatory mental health strategy aimed at enhancing user empowerment in decision-making regarding psychiatric drug use. This study analyzed GAM's contributions to mental health care and explored its alignments with Family and Community Medicine (FCM). An integrative literature review was conducted following Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) framework and PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A search in VHL/LILACS (2011–2025) identified 59 records, resulting in the inclusion of 29 articles in the final synthesis. The included studies, predominantly qualitative intervention-research within the Brazilian psychosocial care contexto, highlighted GAM's major contributions: fostering user autonomy, care co-management, valuing subjective experiences with medication, and challenging excessive medicalization. Regarding FCM, contributions included group care, territory-based interventions, network strengthening, and professional education. Although research remains concentrated in specialized mental health services, experiences in Primary Health Care (PHC) were identified. Findings show strong convergence with core FCM principles, particularly person-centered care, longitudinal care, comprehensiveness, shared decision-making, quaternary prevention, and rational drug use. In conclusion, GAM holds significant potential to enhance mental health care in PHC, particularly in monitoring patients using psychotropic medications by promoting participatory and shared care practices. However, the scarcity of literature directly linked to FCM underscores the need for further research on its implementation and outcomes in this setting.
