DENTIN HYPERSENSITIVITY TRIGGERED BY DENTAL WHITENING GELS
an integrative literature review

Minimally invasive procedures are increasingly well-accepted today. Consequently, dental bleaching has become one of the most sought-after and frequently performed procedures for whitening teeth. The general objective of this study is to discuss dentin sensitivity triggered by dental bleaching, as well as the efficacy of desensitizing agents currently available in the dental market. An integrative literature review was conducted, with data collected from the BVS (Virtual Health Library), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), and LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature) databases. Eight original clinical trial articles published between 2015 and 2022 were selected for data collection. Authors such as Pierote et al. (2020), Parreiras et al. (2019), Kutuk et al. (2019), Moura et al. (2016), and Penha et al. (2018) observed a reduction in dentin sensitivity resulting from dental bleaching procedures when desensitizing agents were used. Conversely, Crescente and Pinto (2016) and Maran et al. (2018) did not find a significant difference regarding the use of these products. Based on these results, it can be concluded that various types of desensitizing agents are effective in mitigating dentin hypersensitivity across different dental bleaching techniques, although this reduction may not be statistically significant in some cases.Downloads
