Abstract

This study aims to analyze psychological and psychosocial interventions for cancer patients, discussing the contributions of Psycho-Oncology to comprehensive care and considering the specific characteristics of their application in clinical and hospital settings. This qualitative, exploratory study is based on a narrative literature review. Searches were conducted in the SciELO, PubMed, and CAPES Journals databases, considering publications from 2015 to 2025. Given the absence of studies that met the established criteria, complementary academic materials and established reference works in the field were included. The review identified different possibilities for intervention in Psycho-Oncology, including cognitive rehabilitation, psychoeducation, relaxation and mindfulness techniques, therapeutic and support groups, art therapy, and interventions related to palliative care, spirituality, and grief processes. These practices address different dimensions involved in the experience of cancer and may be directed toward patients and their support networks. The findings also indicate specific characteristics related to the setting of practice, with greater possibilities for continuity and therapeutic depth in clinical settings, whereas interventions in hospital settings are often brief and directed toward emerging needs. It is concluded that Psycho-Oncology has its own specific characteristics and contributes to comprehensive and humanized care guided by the individuality of patients throughout the cancer trajectory.

Psychologist, educator, and internship supervisor in the field of Psychology, with experience in the healthcare sector and professional practice within the Unified Health System (SUS) in Brazil. She holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology, a Multiprofessional Residency in Primary Care, Family and Community Health from the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN), and a Residency in Health Psychology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). She earned a Master’s degree in Health and Society from UERN, with research focused on parental burnout—specifically from the maternal perspective—within the context of Primary Health Care. Professionally, she works in Hospital Psychology at a referral center for oncological care within the SUS, providing psychological support, intake, active listening, and follow-up care for patients and their families, while engaging in interdisciplinary practice within a high-complexity clinical environment. She possesses experience across various levels of healthcare, including Primary Care, Specialized Care, and Hospital-based care. In the academic sphere, she serves as a lecturer in an undergraduate Psychology program, with experience teaching Health Psychology, Hospital Psychology, and Scientific Methodology, as well as supervising clinical internships. Her work encompasses teaching, academic advising, and student supervision, with a particular interest in the intersections between Psychology, public health, the processes of illness, healthcare provision, the humanization of care, and psychological practice within healthcare settings.
