ADVERSITIES AND EXPECTATIONS IN THE LGBTQI+ COMMUNITY'S ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE

AN ANALYSIS OF PRACTICES AND CHALLENGES

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The National Comprehensive Health Policy for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transvestites, and Transgender People (LGBT) was created by the Ministry of Health through Ordinance No. 2,836, dated December 1, 2011, and aims to ensure that the LGBT population has equal and respectful access to health services, taking into account their particularities and vulnerability. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to document the difficulties faced by these communities, which, despite fighting for recognition and respect, remain marginalized by prejudice and lack of knowledge. RESEARCH PROCESS: This study conducted a systematic literature review, classified as qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory in nature, based on existing studies and synthesizing previously published studies on the topic. Studies that addressed practices, challenges, and strategies for inclusion in primary health care for the LGBTQI+ community were selected. IMPLICATIONS AND PERSPECTIVES: In short, although significant challenges remain, the possibilities for promoting access to healthcare for the LGBTQI+ community are evident and depend on integrated actions involving training, public policies, and community engagement. Investing in the training of professionals sensitive to diversity issues and the implementation of inclusive practices is essential to reducing inequalities and guaranteeing the universal right to health. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: This study highlighted that, despite advances in inclusion policies and awareness about the health of the LGBTQI+ population, several barriers persist that hinder effective access to healthcare for this community. Among the main obstacles are prejudice and discrimination on the part of healthcare professionals, the lack of specific training, and the insufficient provision of services sensitive to the specific needs of LGBTQI+ individuals.
